Question by Sarah P: Where can I find gluten free/egg free mayo?
I am looking for gluten free/egg free mayo. And before you say they don’t make it, they do cause I’ve bought it before but the store stopped carrying it so now I’m trying to find it online but can’t. Or even if anyone knows a recipe so that I can make it.

Try your local health/organic food store. Or go to Publix…if they don’t have it, they’ll order it for you.

I eat vegan and gluten free. I use Veganaise. You can find it at health food stores.

Have you considered making your own? This recipe should help:

    Homemade Olive Oil Mayonnaise

3-5 (~3/4 c.) free range whole eggs or equivalent egg substitute (tofu)
2 c. extra virgin olive oil
    1 t. mustard powder
    1 t. sea salt
    garlic powder, to taste
    3 T. lemon juice

    Optional Add-Ins (Any combo):

    tarragon
    rosemary
    parsley
    curry
    cayenne pepper

Combine everything except the olive oil. Blend until smooth on medium speed (about 1 minute).

Carefully and slowly pour the olive oil into the running blender, a little at a time. Blend for an additional 30 seconds to mix the flavors.

    Serve or refrigerate.

    Hope this helps!

Follow Your Heart’s Vegenaise is GF, as is Spectrum Organic’s egg-free mayo. I’m having a hard time finding people who sell the stuff online. I suggest dropping a dragnet on a search engine to find out who sells the stuff (I checked out glutenfree.com and glutenfreepantry.com, but they don’t sell either one).

With that said, I think the recipe above using tofu is on the right track, but I think the proportions are a bit off. I used to make this when I worked in a vegetarian restaurant:

1/2 block silken tofu (Mori-Nu brand)
1/4 c lemon juice or GF vinegar
    1/4 c oil
1/2 tsp dry mustard, OR 1 1/2 tsp prepared dijon
    3/4 tsp salt
you might like a tsp or two of sugar or honey
1-2 Tbsp water to aid blending

Just blend all this together. Taste and adjust flavors to suit. Mustard increases in flavor as it sits. This doesn’t keep very long, about 7 days in refrigerator.

After much searching, I found one place that sells Spectrum egg-free mayo online: http://www.shopnatural.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

There is a product called Nayonaisse – it is egg & gluten free.
    product information: http://www.nasoya.com/nasoya/nayonaise_original.html

I’ve seen it at Whole Foods & other natural food grocers.

Vegan Mayo Recipe by: Roberta Joiner

This is the one I teach at McDougall program and use all the time -great for potato salad with lots of dijon. Vit C makes it nice and tart – more like a sour cream than a mayo.

1 Pkg firm or extra firm silken tofu
1000 mg of vit C, crushed
1 tsp onion or garlic powder
    1 tsp yellow mustard
the juice of 1 fresh lemon

Puree all in food processor. Add Dijon mustard for a great dipping sauce for artichokes or asparagus or sandwich spread.

I’ve never heard of this. It beggars belief, anyway, since mayonnaise is made of eggs and olive oil, and that’s pretty much it. The idea of someone making an egg-free mayo is so strange – it would be like an egg-free fried egg.

Maybe the manufacturer stopped making it? Ask the store why they stopped selling it – perhaps they might restock if you asked, if it’s still available.

Most natural foods stores carry Vegenaise and/or Nayonaise. Vegenaise is made by Follow Your Heart (www.followyourheart.com), and there’s a link on the website that will tell you where you can find their products.
